For those of you that remember...my son Toby has some major issues with his feet. He is VERY flat-footed and it causes him a lot of pain from his feet, through his legs, up into his back. Last summer we tried a procedure where he was in casts for 6 weeks on each foot and that helped a bit but not enough for what he wants to get out of life. The next option was surgery.
Today was the BIG day for surgery number one. They did his right foot first since that is the one, which gives him the most pain. The procedures done...the two bones where his arch should be were fused together and then a titanium arch was implanted, and his Achilles tendon was lengthened. This involves a z-cut being made into the tendon, it is stretched, and then sutured back together. OUCH!
So far he is doing AMAZING! He was given a nerve blocker behind his knee which seems to have been awesome for pain. He is also on percocet every three hours as well. The only complaint so far are some sharp pains in the arch area and he is bored...bed rest for a week! We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Here he is a few hours after the surgery getting settled in at my Mom's. Since I go back to work on Monday we thought it best for him to stay there where he can be waited on all day! lol
He goes in Tuesday or Wednesday for a follow up check up and cast change. I am hoping he stays with the no pain so when it comes time to do the left foot he is alright with that.
Thank you for all the well wishes we have received on facebook too!!!
Hope all goes well, Jen. I had surgery on both my feet 3 months ago, and I'm so glad that I did. In fact, wish I had done it sooner. Well wishes and success for Toby!
